The string and vocal trio Low Lily (formerly Annalivia) explores the roots and branches of American folk music with traditional influences and modern inspiration, weaving together a unique brand of acoustic music. Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) are masterful players with deep relationships to traditional music styles ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, New England, and Old Time Appalachian sounds.
Fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger is one of New England’s leading traditional fiddlers. She grew up as an active member of the folk community in Maine, where she learned to play at the feet of some of the most venerable musicians in New England. Lissa is a graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music and has played in Russia, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and the United States. In addition to her own solo show, Lissa has performed with Solas and Childsplay, and was a founding member of the fiddle group Halali.
Recently she has turned a new leaf with “Covers”, a recording released on June 4th 2013, which as the name suggests, is a mix of beloved pop songs from the 1950s to today. Co-produced with Aoife O’Donovan (of Crooked Still and The Goat Rodeo Sessions), Lissa’s sixth solo album reinterprets classics by artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Nelly, Weezer, The Magnetic Fields, Dire Straits, and many more.
Liz Simmons (vocals, guitar) grew up listening to her mother sing traditional songs from Ireland, Scotland, England and America, as well as the New Orleans brass music her father plays. Since then, she has developed a unique vocal and guitar style that draws from her musical history in folk and ballad traditions as well as the sounds of contemporary folk music, and she has also become a respected songwriter. She is a graduate of Goddard College, where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s. She also performs with the all-women group EVA and has played with Long Time Courting, the John Whelan Band, Hannah Sanders, North Cregg, The Sevens, and Southeast Expressway.
Acoustic guitarist and mandolinist Flynn Cohen has performed all over the world with notable acts such as legendary Irish accordion player John Whelan, modern bluegrass band Tony Watt & Southeast Expressway, and in his own solo project. He studied Music at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England and at Mills College in Oakland, California and when he is not touring, he manages a large roster of students in his private studio in the Boston area.
